Birmingham Through the Seasons

Spring (March to May)

As parks and gardens begin to bloom, outdoor events return to the calendar and temperatures gradually become milder.

Average temperatures typically range from 8°C to 17°C, making it a great time for city walks, canal-side strolls, food tours in Harborne and Birmingham, and exploring neighbourhoods such as Digbeth and Jewellery Quarter.

Don't forget a light jacket and umbrella, as spring showers are common. We also recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes and a light waterproof jacket.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings longer days, outdoor events, food festivals and opportunities to enjoy Birmingham's many green spaces.

Temperatures usually range between 18°C and 25°C, although recent years have seen periods of much hotter weather and occasional heatwaves.

The city comes alive with festivals, outdoor dining, sporting events and live music, while nearby attractions across the West Midlands offer everything from slow escapes to family days out. If it feels too warm, start exploring the city centre before temperatures peak, then spend the warmest part of the afternoon inside a museum, gallery, or indoor attraction. As temperatures remain warmer in the evening, head out to enjoy rooftop bars and canal-side dining.

During particularly warm conditions, it's a good idea to carry water, wear sunscreen and plan indoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

Visiting During Hot Weather

Hot weather is becoming more common across the UK, and Birmingham is no exception. During periods of high temperatures, visitors may wish to plan their day slightly differently.

Many public spaces, attractions and venues provide access to drinking water, and Birmingham's parks and gardens offer welcome shade on warmer days.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn offers colourful parks, seasonal events and comfortable temperatures for exploring.

Expect temperatures between 8°C and 18°C, with crisp mornings and cooler evenings. It's a particularly good time for cultural breaks, food experiences and exploring the region's heritage attractions.

Layers are recommended, alongside an umbrella and comfortable walking shoes, as conditions can vary throughout the day.

Winter (December to February)

Winter transforms Birmingham into a festive destination, with seasonal events, shopping, theatre performances and cosy places to eat and drink.

Temperatures typically range from 1°C to 8°C. Snow is relatively uncommon, but cold and frosty mornings can occur.

A warm coat, waterproof footwear and layers will help you make the most of your visit.

If you're attending a festival, concert or sporting event, organisers may introduce additional measures during particularly hot weather, such as extra water stations or amended operating arrangements.
