Step into the heart of Birmingham - the birthplace of the legendary Balti - where you’ll find more than just delicious food. You’ll discover a story of heritage, pride and pure flavour.

Welcome to Shababs, where the scent of spices greets you before you even enter,  and where chef-owner Zaf is keeping a proud Brummie food tradition alive - one Balti at a time.

Let’s dive into his story.

Born in Birmingham, built on spice

For Zaf, the Balti isn’t just a dish - it’s in his DNA. He grew up surrounded by kitchens, culture and community. “I got involved at a young age,” he says. “I think that’s part of my success. I just enjoyed playing around with spices and creating different dishes for myself.”

That hands-on experience turned into a lifelong passion, and eventually into Shababs, one of the most celebrated Balti houses in the city. But it’s more than just a restaurant - it’s part of the fabric of Birmingham’s food story.

What makes a Balti a proper Balti?

If you’re new to the dish, don’t mistake it for just another curry. Zaf explains what sets it apart: “The Balti is a thin pressed carbon steel bowl. It heats up very quickly and in under 10 minutes, you can have a fresh Balti cooked in the same dish it’s served in. That’s what makes it special – it’s fast, fiery, and full of flavour.”

Cooked at high heat with a blend of fresh spices, the Balti is designed for sharing, sizzling straight from the stove to your table. No reheating, no shortcuts. Just real food, made the right way.

The soul of the Balti’s birthplace

Located on Ladypool Road, Shababs is part of a community known for its hospitality, vibrancy and unbeatable food. “I feel proud to be on Ladypool Road,” Zaf says. “Everyone’s friendly, very laid back. It’s always been full of life.”

And that life spills into the restaurant – locals grabbing a quick bite, visitors from all around making the pilgrimage for a ‘proper Balti’, and generations of families coming back for the taste they grew up with.

“There’s people visiting to eat from all parts of the UK,” Zaf adds. “You can eat anywhere you want – but in order to sample the proper authentic Balti experience, you’ve got to visit Ladypool Road.”

Not just a dish – a Brummie staple

In a world of fast food and big chains, Shababs is a reminder of what really matters: quality ingredients, family recipes, and deep roots. The Balti was born in Birmingham, and thanks to people like Zaf, it continues to evolve while staying true to its origins.

So, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong Brummie, next time hunger calls skip the chains and follow the scent of spices to Shababs. Order a sizzling Balti, soak up the atmosphere, and taste a true piece of Birmingham history.
