Built by industrialist John Nettlefold in 1903 for his growing family the house and garden are now open to the public 7 days a week with exhibition rooms offering an insight into Edwardian life both above and below stairs.
A beautiful wisteria framed terrace provides views over 7 acres of Arts and Crafts designed garden and the terrace tea room is a wonderful place to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea. The garden itself offers colour and interest throughout the year and is home to a beautiful walled garden and many original features.
Winterbourne is owned and operated by the University of Birmingham and visits to the house and garden can include access to other University sites such as the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and Lapworth Museum of Geology. Visits are best placed in the region of 3 hours. A standard itinerary could include the following:-
- Tour of the garden from the Head Gardener
- Traditional Afternoon Tea
In addition, visits to the Barber Institute or Lapworth Museum of Geology make a short visit a full day out. After lunch or Afternoon Tea, the group can take a pleasant stroll across the leafy University campus and 'Green Heart' before exploring the other museum or Art Gallery at their leisure, or as part of a guided tour. Other opportunities include the chance to experience the Victorian Printing presses housed on site at Winterbourne.
