A glimpse into netball’s rich history

Netball, a dynamic and fast-paced sport, boasts a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Originating from basketball, it was developed as a distinct game in England by Clara Gregory Baer. Over the years, netball has evolved, becoming particularly popular in Commonwealth countries. Its strategic play, requiring agility, precision, and teamwork, has captivated audiences and players alike.

Netball's growth on the global stage has been impressive. The formation of the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) in 1960 was a significant milestone, helping to standardise rules and promote international competitions.

Today, netball is played by millions worldwide, with major tournaments like the Netball World Cup and the Commonwealth Games showcasing the sport's elite talent and thrilling matches. In the UK, approximately 3 million women and girls play netball every year with 660,000 women and girls playing weekly and over 800,000 people playing weekly.

 

The path to the Super League Grand Final

The Netball Super League, established in 2005, represents the pinnacle of club netball in the UK. This premier league brings together the best ten teams from across England, Scotland and Wales, each competing fiercely over a season to claim the coveted championship title.

Instrumental in raising the standard of netball, the league provides a platform for players to showcase their skills and for fans to witness top-tier competition.

The journey to the Super League Grand Final is a challenging and exciting one. Teams navigate through a series of matches, accumulating points to secure their place in the playoffs. The semi-finals determine which two teams will face off in the ultimate showdown, promising high-stakes action and unparalleled excitement.

 

 

How the competition works

The Super League season begins with 18 regular rounds of competition where each team will play each other twice in a home and away format. Following this, the teams finishing in the top four positions on the league table qualify for the semi-finals. The teams finishing first and second in the table earn home semi-finals, with first playing fourth and second playing third. The winners of these two semi-finals will play in the Grand Final and vie for the championship title, with the losing teams from each semi-final playing in the third place play off on the same day.
