This summer, Secret Cinema - the global pioneer of immersive storytelling - will bring to life Rydell High in Birmingham with its one-of-a-kind production of Grease: The Live Experience. This UK premiere marks Secret Cinema’s first event of 2023 and its first ever in Birmingham.
Grease is the word! Based on the 1978 Paramount Pictures film, audiences will step back in time to Rydell High’s senior year in the summer of 1959 and experience, first hand, the magic of one of the most iconic movie musicals of all time. This first-of-its-kind, unmissable experience and outdoor spectacle will transport the audience into the heart of Grease as they explore the world and find themselves captivated by the most quintessential of summer nights.
Tell me more, tell me more! From 26th July to 13th August, Secret Cinema will welcome fans to Birmingham’s NEC as they are transported into the world of Danny and Sandy, with the school fizzing with anticipation ahead of the American National Bandstand dance contest. As day turns to night, fans can sing and dance their hearts out to the classic film soundtrack, roam the corridors with the Pink Ladies, watch the T-Birds at work in the auto shop, or face off against the jocks on the sports field - capped off with an unforgettable enhanced screening of the much-loved musical film.
Tickets are limited for this momentous occasion; fans can sign up at secretcinema.com for early access to tickets ahead of general on sale on 5th May.
Secret Cinema’s reputation for trailblazing storytelling through spectacular, cinematic extravaganzas spans 15 years and over 70 productions worldwide. From intimate grassroots film screenings in abandoned buildings, to epic productions in open spaces worldwide, attended by thousands at each performance. To date, the UK-based brand has welcomed well over a million people into their one-of-a-kind secret filmic worlds.
In a Secret Cinema world, the boundaries between performer, audience, set and reality constantly shift; over the years fans have seamlessly travelled ‘Back to the Future’ with Marty McFly, stumbled out of the ‘Moulin Rouge’ onto the cobbled streets of Paris, joined the Rebel Alliance in ‘Star Wars’ and danced the night away at Kellerman’s Resort for ‘Dirty Dancing’.
Max Alexander, CEO, Secret Cinema said: “For more than a decade, Secret Cinema has been known for entertaining audiences with spectacular worlds based on some of the most iconic and much-loved films of all time. And what could be more iconic and more loved than the nation’s favourite movie musical, Grease? The whole Secret Cinema team could not be more excited to be bringing to life Rydell High and the world of Grease for audiences in Birmingham this summer.”
“We are thrilled to be working with Secret Cinema to bring Grease to life in the UK and are confident that audiences will be immersed in all the scenes and songs that they love from this much-loved classic film,” said Marie Marks, Senior Vice President, Themed Entertainment, Paramount.
Ian Taylor, Managing Director for Conventions & Exhibitions at NEC Birmingham, added: “Our versatile venue is the perfect place to host the first ever Secret Cinema event in Birmingham.
