Birmingham’s internationally acclaimed Ikon Gallery is more than just a space for art – it’s a canalside landmark where global creativity meets Brummie warmth. Nestled in Brindleyplace and housed in a striking Grade II-listed neo-gothic school building, it’s here that Melanie, the gallery’s artistic director, is shaping an exhibitions programme recognised around the world.

Bringing the world to Birmingham

With its two floors of ever-changing exhibitions, Ikon is dedicated to showcasing the very best of contemporary art – locally, nationally, and internationally.

“Ikon is a gallery that’s well-known not just in this region, but genuinely internationally,” Melanie explains. “Even when I was in Singapore, I knew about Ikon’s great reputation. That’s why I moved here – to be part of something truly special.”

From sound and film to photography, painting, sculpture, and installation, the gallery brings together artists and mediums from every corner of the globe, making it a must-visit for art lovers.

A creative, close-knit community

While Ikon draws talent from around the world, it’s Birmingham’s own creative spirit that keeps Melanie inspired.

“There’s a rich arts community here in the West Midlands, and it feels very close-knit,” she says. “People are open to sharing ideas and resources. It feels like there’s always a real person behind every organisation – that’s very reflective of Birmingham’s friendliness.”

Brummie warmth on the canals

Beyond its exhibitions, Ikon captures what Birmingham is all about: a welcoming city where creativity is shared, not gatekept.

“You’re almost always greeted by a friendly face and an ‘Alright Bab?’,” Melanie laughs. “It’s generous, accessible, and that makes it an incredible place to work and create.”
