If the prospect of some of the world’s best athletes competing in Birmingham has motivated you to learn more about the science of sport, Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum has the perfect family event – The Great Thinktank Games!
Home to four floors of hands-on exhibits and historical collections, Thinktank at Millennium Point is the perfect place to celebrate all that’s great about sport with new interactive family displays and exhibitions.
During ‘On your Marks, Get Set, Show’ families will learn that understanding science can help us be better at the sports we love and enjoy our own sporting achievements… with a fire-cracking ceremony to celebrate!
Inspired by big sporting events and record-breaking achievements, this family show is a lively and interactive way to learn about the science of sport and demonstrates why a healthy diet is important for people who take part in sports.
In Science Busking, another of The Great Thinktank Games events, you will challenge your engineering brainpower to build the tallest tower or longest bridge, test your reaction time to try to beat world-class athletes and learn how sport and Newton’s third law are connected.
When you’ve completed your challenge, make your very own Thinktank medal badge to celebrate your achievements in the Thinktank Games!
On your Marks, Get Set, Show is at the theatre on Level 3 of Thinktank between 1pm and 3pm or 3pm-3.30pm on weekdays between Monday 25th July and Friday 2nd September 2022. Science Busking takes place between 2.30pm – 4pm every day.
This event is included in the Thinktank entry price. No booking is required for this event, but it is recommended that visitors pre-book an admission ticket particularly at busy times such as school holidays.
If you’re in the company of LEGO Master Builders during your visit to Thinktank, they will love taking part in the Drawbots LEGO Studio Takeover during the summer holidays.
Shuffle, spin and dance with little DIY robots. Try your hand at building an award-winning robot athlete or enthusiastic robot mascot to take part in fun robot sports.
Younger robot builders can have a go at building their own Duplo Hockey player and try to hit the back of the net!
Suitable for children aged 6+. The session costs £2.50 per person, in addition to the Thinktank admission price. Please book the LEGO workshop at the Thinktank ticket desk on arrival.
Workshops are 45 minutes and take place at 12:30pm, 2pm, and 3pm between Monday 25th July and Friday 2nd September 2022.
While you’re at Thinktank, stop off at MiniBrum, the museum’s very own mini city, where the kids are in charge.
This interactive gallery is aimed at children under 8 years old and features child-sized world features recognisable landmarks, such as Birmingham canals, Selfridges and the Old Joe Clock Tower at the University of Birmingham. It features several different play zones for children to discover and enjoy.
And if there are any junior stargazers in the family step inside Thinktank’s Planetarium and explore the outer reaches of space, get up close to constellations, journey through the night-sky and adventure through the solar system.
The Thinktank planetarium is a theatre under a dome, specially designed to help you explore astronomy, space, and the night sky. Inside a planetarium, images appear all around you, not just in front of you – it makes you feel completely immersed in the action!
The new 4K planetarium system has brighter, sharper images and crystal clear surround-sound. It is the only one of its kind in the West Midlands.
And there’s even more to do at Thinktank this summer. The Science Garden is an outdoor discovery space packed with surprises and fun activities for the whole family. It offers an adventurous and entertaining day out, bringing themes of engineering, mechanics and transportation to life through over 30 hands-on exhibits.
Visitors of all ages can get ‘bodies on’ with exciting and inventive exhibits including an eight metre high clanging ‘Terminus’ machine and a giant human-sized hamster wheel that has a top speed of 30 revolutions per minute.
