Looking to spend a day discovering Birmingham’s cultural side, with a mix of art, history, and hidden gems? Join Lavante and his siblings, Roshane and Sharnte, as they set out to explore the city’s creative and historical heart.
From modern art to Victorian industry, their journey takes in some of the most fascinating spots Birmingham has to offer – perfect for families, curious minds, and anyone looking to see the city in a new light.
Time to get exploring.
Starting strong at Ikon Gallery, Brindleyplace
Their day began in Brindleyplace, at the striking modern building that houses the Ikon Gallery. With its clean lines and canalside setting, it’s a peaceful space that invites you to slow down and look closely.
“We loved how interactive everything was,” says Lavante. “There was one exhibit where you could actually manipulate sound using hand movements - it felt futuristic, but also fun.”
Roshane, the tech enthusiast of the group, was especially drawn to the installations that blurred the line between digital and physical art. Meanwhile, Sharnte found herself captivated by a series of vivid paintings exploring identity and memory.
Outside, the family grabbed a coffee at the neighbouring café and strolled along the canal, watching boats drift by under iron bridges. “You forget you’re in the middle of a busy city here,” says Sharnte. “It’s so calm and scenic.”
A history lesson at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG)
A short walk through the heart of the city brought them to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, a grand and welcoming space nestled beneath Chamberlain Square.
The trio explored galleries filled with treasures, from ancient Roman coins to shimmering Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Roshane was particularly intrigued by the museum’s section on Birmingham’s role in the Industrial Revolution.
“You hear about it in school,” he said, “but seeing the tools, the machines, and the stories of real workers – it hits different.”
After soaking in the exhibits, they paused for lunch in the museum café - a bright, airy space where the smell of fresh pastries and the clinking of coffee cups made for a relaxing break.
“This place has a quiet energy,” Lavante reflects. “It makes you want to learn more about where you're from."
Hidden stories at the Coffin Works, Jewellery Quarter
“This was my favourite part,” says Sharnte, who’s always been drawn to hidden histories. “It’s not just about coffins - it’s about craftsmanship, industry, and the lives behind the scenes.”
The tour guide, a passionate local volunteer, brought the building to life with stories of former workers, vintage brass fittings, and the machinery that still stands in place – some of it still functional.
Lavante noted how immersive the space felt. “You could really imagine the people working here, the noise, the smell of metal and polish... It’s not your typical museum, and that’s what makes it so special.”
A day of connection and discovery
As the sun began to set, the siblings walked back through the Jewellery Quarter, reflecting on their day.
“It’s easy to forget how much culture is right here on our doorstep,” Lavante says. “Each place we visited showed a different side of Birmingham - artistic, historical, and personal.”
For Roshane, the day was a reminder that museums and galleries aren’t just for tourists. “They’re for us too. For locals. For families. You don’t need to go far to find something meaningful.”
And for Sharnte, the experience deepened her appreciation for the city. “There’s beauty and creativity everywhere - you just have to look.”
