8 July: Local award-winning music artist Lady Leshurr has been unveiled as the headliner for The Hundred at Birmingham Phoenix’s home ground, Edgbaston Stadium, on the 1 August, while rap star Lady Sanity will be performing to fans at the ground on the 23 July.
These signings are part of an all-star music line-up set to perform at one of the most anticipated sports and entertainment events of the summer – a brand-new, fast-paced 100-ball cricket competition which starts on Wednesday 21 July just days after Covid-19 restrictions are due to lift.
Known for her Queen's Speech series and her effortless freestyles, Lady Leshurr has won prestigious awards including the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to music and charity, MOBO Awards for “Best Female Act” and “Best Rap / Grime Act”, as well as winning Best Solo Female at the Birmingham Music Awards.
The Hundred is hosting the biggest sport and music collaboration in UK history this summer giving both established and up-and-coming musicians and DJs an opportunity to play live again. There will be live music and DJs at each of the 64 games thanks to an unprecedented collaboration between The Hundred and BBC Music Introducing, meaning the entertainment off the pitch will match the action on it. Lady Leshurr and Lady Sanity be joined by other BBC Music Introducing acts such as up and coming KIOKO and The Lottery Winners.
Music is integral to The Hundred’s match day experience, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The line-up of music talent comes as part of The Hundred’s ambition to throw cricket’s doors open to broader audiences this summer, welcoming in families and inspiring the next generation to say that cricket is a game for them.
Sanjay Patel, The Hundred Managing Director says, “We’re delighted to announce more big-name artists also including Everything Everything, Jack Garratt and Jade Bird in collaboration with BBC Music Introducing, providing a ground-breaking music programme as part of The Hundred. It’s mixing sport and music in a way that’s not been done before in the UK. Our music line up, coupled with world-class cricket on the pitch, is sure to provide an entertaining day out for the whole family.”
The first home matchday takes place on Friday 23 July when Birmingham Phoenix take on London Spirit, with the women’s team getting underway at 3pm and the men’s team at 6:30pm.
