Looking for a flavour-packed experience that goes beyond your typical night at the pub? Head just a few miles from Birmingham to West Bromwich, where a Midlands institution is serving up bold spices, warm smiles, and a seriously strong sense of community.

Welcome to The Red Lion, one of the UK’s most beloved desi pubs – and a place that captures the true essence of what makes the West Midlands so unforgettable.

Where curry meets community

Family-run since 1997 by the Purewal family, The Red Lion has grown from a local gem into something of a legend. Today, it’s proudly helmed by Satnam Purewal, whose passion has helped shape the pub into more than just a spot to eat and drink - it's a place where stories are swapped, laughter flows as freely as the drinks, and every dish tells a tale of tradition.

“A desi pub is a traditional pub which serves home-style Indian food,” explains Satnam. “They tend to be very Midlands-based, around Birmingham and the Black Country.”

And this is what makes The Red Lion so special. The fusion of classic British pub culture with rich, comforting Indian cuisine, all served with that unmistakable West Midlands warmth.

Food that feels like home

From sizzling tandoori platters and smoky grilled lamb chops to soul-warming curries slow-cooked with care, the food here doesn’t just satisfy your hunger – it hugs your soul.

“When you have food from a desi pub,” Satnam says, “what you’re getting is a taste of home. You’ll feel the passion, the homey feel of that food, and the real love that has gone into making that dish.”

Pair your plate with a pint, grab a seat, and soak up the buzz. This is pub grub redefined - and completely unique to the Midlands.

A melting pot of culture

What makes The Red Lion truly stand out isn’t just what’s served on the plate – it’s the atmosphere. Think lively, welcoming, and wonderfully diverse. Whether it’s families gathering for a weekend meal, groups of mates catching the football, or locals popping in after work, everyone’s welcome and everyone feels it.

“We’re very sociable people in the West Midlands,” Satnam laughs. “Put people from the West Midlands in a pub - they’re gonna get on.”

That sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than yourself, is what brings people back again and again.

More than a pub – A Midlands moment

At The Red Lion, cultures collide in the best possible way. Plates are shared. Conversations flow. You might come for the food, but you’ll stay for the feeling - that warm, buzzing energy that says, “you’re among friends here.”

“It brings people from loads of different communities into one place to share their love of food and just create a vibe - which is unique to the West Midlands.”
