About

What does it mean to look at a Renaissance painting through a queer lens in 2021?

CineQ return to host an evening of queer short film responding to the distinctive and characterful Renaissance painting, 'Alexander the Great', examining notions of power, masculinity, and gender expression. Made in about 1494 by the Master of the Griselda Legend, the painting is a familiar sight in the Barber's Green Gallery.

Lecturer in History of Art, Dr Gregory Salter, will be introducing the evening with a queer reading of the work. Dr Salter will be reflecting on the painting through a queer 'contemporary' lens, importing references and ideas from the current day to a time where queerness, as we understand it today, didn't necessarily exist.

Book your spot to hear more on the night, followed by a film screening and discussion.

This event is free and 18+. The screening and discussion will take place online via Zoom.
