“There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo?”

Well there have been several sightings at Birmingham Hippodrome, which turned into the deep dark wood this week – home to the Gruffalo.

Based on Julia Donaldson’s award-winning book, The Gruffalo follows a little mouse’s hunt for a nice hazelnut to eat. While travelling through the wood, she manages to get away from a fox, owl and snake by telling them she is meeting a made-up monster called the Gruffalo. Little does she know that he really does exist – and lives in the wood as well!

A pre-school audience just after lunchtime can be a tough crowd, but any potential tiny hecklers were entertained with the show’s funny songs and lively performances. The children were giggling and growling along, as the tiny mouse managed to outsmart the mighty Gruffalo and enjoy her nutty dinner.

Whilst my three-year-old was convinced that he’d be visiting an actual wood in central Birmingham, the Hippodrome was a brilliant alternative and he loved the whole show.

The Gruffalo follows the success of Dear Zoo Live! at Birmingham Hippodrome, and there’s plenty more coming up that young children will enjoy. Check out these activities and workshops, which start at just £2 per child:
