The new park at Port Loop is being delivered by Port Loop developers Urban Splash and Places for People, alongside the Canal & River Trust and Birmingham City Council. Designed by Grant Associates, it is a gift to the local community, featuring playful grass mounds plus a lawn on which residents and locals can host events, festivals and other events in the future.
The partners will mark the park’s completion with the day-long, family friendly ‘Play Out Til Tea’ event. There will be a wealth of free activities including; face-painting, nature activities, an outdoor park library, picnic areas, craft areas, and a ‘drive in cinema’ zone – where kids will be able to make mini cardboard cars, then ‘drive’ up to watch a film on an outdoor LED screen.
Meanwhile, outside the park, Rotton Park Street will be transformed into a bustling area of play; closed to cars all day it will be divided into a range of playzones with fun activities including a bike, scooter and roller skate zone, Jump Rope UK’s Double Dutch Zone, a Hula Hoop Zone, Playbox dome building activities and a free zone to which families can bring their own games. There’ll be a street art area too, with two local artists adorning the street with washable paint creations.
Local traders have been drafted in to ensure a broad food and drink offering, with ice cream, Joe’s Coffee Cart, Smoking Bagels, Bakers Pantry plus many more; the first 200 people through the door will also receive complimentary food vouchers to use on the day.
Speaking on behalf of the joint venture partners, project director Adam Willetts said: “We’re incredibly excited for the launch of South Park at Port Loop – our first green space in the heart of this new neighbourhood.
“It’s a chance for people from the local community, be it those already living there or those who hope to move to Port Loop in the future – and from broader Birmingham – to come and celebrate a new public space. We are expecting hundreds of people on the day, each of whom can revel in the activities to hand, find out more about Port Loop – and of course see the first homes we’re creating here.”
The opening of the park follows the joint venture partners’ successful launch of the first Port Loop homes – interested customers can look around a new show House at Port Loop which will be open all day on 21st July.
The event is free and will be held at South Park and Rotton Park Street at Port Loop, Birmingham, B16 0AP. Guests can travel on foot, by scooter or bike, or even take a water taxi from Brindley Place. Registration is recommended via port-loop.com.
