Nature Valley Classic Tennis Tournament
This year’s Nature Valley Classic tennis tournament at Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham is being billed as a ‘ticket to summer’ by event organisers, with a feast of entertainment planned on and off the court from 16-24 June.
The Nature Valley Classic, a British Tennis event, is an important stop for the world’s best female tennis players in the lead-up to Wimbledon and this year’s tournament features a star-studded line-up of players including reigning Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza, two-time Wimbledon champion and defending Birmingham champion Petra Kvitova, five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, British No.1 Johanna Konta and US Open finalist Madison Keys.
As well as the tennis and the chance to tuck into the traditional strawberries and cream, visitors to this year’s Nature Valley Classic will also be able to enjoy open-air bar, dining and barbecue areas plus an enviable line-up of live bands to make a day at the tennis go with a swing. Anyone needing a caffeine hit will enjoy this year’s addition of a coffee bar onsite.
The tournament is also hosting a ‘Wimbledon Presents the Living Surface’ exhibition to showcase grass court tennis and whet appetites ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon, which begin just eight days after the end of the Classic. Visitors to the Nature Valley Classic can now discover the history, technology and science that goes into creating the grass tennis courts like those at the Edgbaston Priory Club. Fans can also take photos of themselves with replicas of the Wimbledon Singles’ Champions Trophies and watch highlights from every Wimbledon singles final since 1970 as part of the exhibition’s ‘Great on Grass’ section.
Staffordshire-born TV and stage star and tennis aficionado Mark Curry returns to the Ann Jones centre court as Master of Ceremonies for the tournament. Curry shot to fame as presenter of Blue Peter before forging a successful acting career. He starred as the Wizard in the hugely successful West End version of Wicked and showed plenty of fancy footwork on his way to winning last year’s Children in Need Strictly Come Dancing special on the BBC.
Live bands scheduled to play at this year’s Nature Valley Classic include:
- Ricky Cool and the In Crowd
- Mariachi Kings
- George Huxley
- Hot House Jazz
- Son Cubano
Plus musical star Emma Hatton will be singing live before the singles final on the Ann Jones Centre Court on Sunday 24th June. Hatton received rave reviews last year for her performance as Eva Perón in Evita at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End and also starred in the UK touring production of the hit show.
