The City Nature Challenge

From April 26th-29th, Birmingham and the Black Country will be taking part in the 2024 City Nature Challenge - a fun, free, global challenge to see which city is wildest! Will you help us show the world how wild we REALLY are?

From Auckland to Zaragoza, this year more than 500 cities the world over will be taking part in the challenge! And whether it's a dandelion in your garden or a rare bird spotted on your local nature reserve, every single record counts towards our total and will help move us up the global leaderboard!

The easiest way to make your records count is to use the free iNaturalist app! Simply take a photo of any plant or animal and the app's inbuilt software will help you to identify it whilst sending the record straight to us! So as well as taking part in the challenge, it can be a great way for you to learn more about the wild world around you! Intrigued by a fascinating flower but don't know what it is? Not sure what insect you're looking at? The iNaturalist app can help you to find out!

Why not join us on our free wildlife-spotting events across the region? Led by our local experts, we'll have wildlife walks at locations including the Jewellery Quarter, Moseley Bog, Portway Hill, Highbury Park and Deer's Leap Wood. On Sunday 28th April, we'll be hosting an all-day bioblitz at Birmingham Botanical Gardens with pond dipping, bug hunting, bird spotting and wildflower walks (please note that you will need to purchase a ticket to enter the Botanical Gardens to access these free events).
