London Northwestern Railway

London Northwestern Railway (LNR) provides intercity and commuter train services on the Euston, Northampton, Birmingham and Liverpool corridors.

LNR is part of West Midlands Trains. WMT is responsible for 2,400 employees and operates 1,300 train services every day, carrying 200,000 passengers.

Around £1 billion will be invested into the network, delivering new trains, improving routes and stations as well as offering better services (basically, making your travel experience pretty amazing).

To make all this happen, we’re going to be spending big. Take a look at some of the highlights:

  • Over £700 million going into new and improved trains
  • 400 new carriages by 2021
  • Free Wi-Fi by 2019 (surfers and workers, rejoice!)
  • Mobile and laptop charging points on all London services by May 2021
  • And breathe …space for an extra 85,000 passengers on rush hour services in Birmingham and London
  • Live train crowding information
  • Improved services and access for disabled passengers (much needed)
  • Better value ticket for part-time workers
  • Compensation when trains are delayed by more than 15 minutes
  • 800 real-time info screens at 150 stations

Exciting times ahead

We’ll be introducing a new timetable, but not until December 2018. It’s aim will be to make more of the fabulous station that is Birmingham New Street.

We’re planning late services in and out of New Street, including the weekends – helping to spark up the region’s night time economy.

From May 2021, there will be a Sunday timetable that runs as many services as a Saturday (In effect, doubling the amount available.)

Two morning and evening rush hour direct services will operate between Walsall and London from Dec 2018 – once again helping to unlock economic growth in the region

The new station at Kenilworth is set to open in December 2017, with an hourly service between Leamington Spa and Coventry

From December 2019, the new bay platform at Coventry will be complete – allowing two trains per hour between Coventry and Nuneaton.

Making stations better

We’re spending more than £60m on improving and sprucing up our stations, with over 1,000 new car park spaces, over 2,500 cycle parking spaces, a cycle hire scheme trial, new and refurbished waiting rooms, and more seats at stations. £70m will be spent on existing and new depots. Believe us, you’ll notice the difference.

Investing in people

We’re proud of our new franchise and our employees should be equally proud. So we’re investing an extra £13 million on staff training, helping them make sure your journey is a great experience from start to finish.. We also plan to create more than 900 new apprenticeships. Bright, young minds that will make
things happen.

We will employ more women and more ethnic minorities, and give work experience placements to more than 250 young people.

Swift and Smart

Smart ticketing makes life for our passengers so much easier and we plan to introduce it right across our network.

Working with Network West Midlands, we will bring the Swift Card to more people in more places – it’s a fast, convenient way to get around the region and can be topped up just like an Oyster Card.

What’s more, a Smart Card Season Ticket will be introduced for passengers between Northampton and London as well as on the St Albans Abbey line.

Over the next nine years, we’ll be investing significantly in our new franchise, ensuring that we play a major part in driving the economy of the region forward. We believe that is the start of a new, golden era for rail travel in the region. Now that is something we all should celebrate.
