Transformed Waterstones High Street bookshop to reopen in Birmingham
Nine week renovation programme underway and includes comprehensive interior and exterior refurbishment
Major redevelopment includes the creation of new children’s and fiction floors, two cafes and a new glass shop front
Family Fun Day event to launch new bookshop on 14th November and a busy events programme to follow
On Saturday 14th November, Waterstones High Street bookshop in Birmingham is to reopen having undergone a significant transformation this autumn.
Waterstones have extended the lease and invested in a nine week renovation programme with the aim of creating a state of the art flagship bookshop for the Midlands - home to many more books than before and a revitalised events programme.
The comprehensive refurbishment of the High Street bookshop, both to the interior and the exterior of the building includes the re-opening of the basement floor to house an impressive new fiction department, a new children’s floor, two café’s, a striking new shop front, a generous choice of comfortable seating, new flooring and attractive oak bookcases fitted throughout.
The bookshop will be a cultural hub for Birmingham’s city centre, running a vibrant and varied events programme to include book launches for local authors, poetry readings, talks from celebrated writers, reading groups, children’s activity days and celebrity book signings. Events already booked in for November include visits from bestselling authors Jonathan Coe on 24th and Simon Scarrow on 25th with more to follow in the run up to Christmas.
The fiction floor in the newly re-opened basement will be one of the biggest in the country, with authoritative ranges of general fiction, science fiction and fantasy, crime, poetry and drama handpicked by Waterstones High Street’s expert Fiction team.
A new fully glazed shop front is being installed to greatly improve the main aspect of the building and to flood the ground floor with light, creating a pleasurable environment in which to browse the ranges of Travel, Local Interest and Bestsellers.
The large third floor will be entirely devoted to an unrivalled range of children’s books, with an active child-centred events programme, regular crafting activities and parent and toddler Story Time sessions. With its own family friendly 42 seat café, baby changing facilities, slide, fish tank and crafting table, Waterstones High Street children’s department will be the perfect environment to inspire young readers and to spend time with the family.
Stuart Bartholomew, Waterstones Birmingham Regional Manager says
