Asianspirational food at Korean restaurant - Topokki
Having never tried Korean food before, I was keen to explore the different flavours of Chinatown. This authentic Korean restaurant did not disappoint, and was both homely, comforting food while being exciting and new! I will be returning to this Korean cafe...a lot.
I was looking to grab a quick bite before heading to the cinema and Birmingham’s bustling Chinatown is the perfect place for sizzling, steaming sustenance! There are a plethora of restaurants to explore, less than 3 minutes from Birmingham New Street Station and I stumbled across Topokki. This Korean cafe claimed home-style cuisine and was filled with hipster 20-somethings and Koreans, this combination assured me that the food was both authentic and cutting-edge.
It was a relaxed, cafe style restaurant with simple, industrial furniture and interesting wall-art. The service was friendly and fast and despite never having tasted Korean food before, I loved the delicious and interestingly-spiced dishes. The flavours were much more complex in comparison to standard Chinese food and my beef stir-fry-type dish was delicious. Between mouthfuls of beef and sticky rice I revelled in the sizzling spicy deliciousness, while fighting off any attempt by my fellow diners to try my meal, using chopsticks. As each dish was delivered to the surrounding tables, I mentally reminded myself to try that on the next occasion, so inevitably I will have to return and eat my way through the menu.
From the colander lights to the rustic tables with inset DIY BBQs and the constant flow of hipsters and vibrant food in stoneware bowls, the Topokki experience was quick, minimal and absolutely mouth-watering. I enjoyed its relaxed environment which attracted large groups of friends, families and couples. It was very good value for money with sizable main dishes averaging around £8, very reasonable considering the number of side dishes usually involved had I gone to a Chinese restaurant.
All in all, this Korean gem is a not to be missed if you venture into Chinatown and would be the perfect place to grab a snack or dinner before a theatre show or catching a film at The Electric Cinema which is less than 2 minutes away.
