Anglo Welsh offers canal boat holiday and day boat hire on the Stratford Canal at Wootton Wawen, near Henley-in-Arden
Cruising to Stratford-upon-Avon is a popular route from Wootton Wawen. You can moor up in the heart of Shakespeare's Stratford in Bancroft Basin, with easy access to the town's shops, theatres, restaurants and museums.
The journey can be done on a three-night weekend or four-night midweek break. It takes around six hours to reach Bancroft Basin, passing through 17 locks.
Along the way, you'll cross the Edstone Aqueduct, the longest canal aqueduct in England, with lovely views of the Warwickshire countryside all around. And you'll pass closeby to the historic village of Wilmcote.
Alternatively, on a short break, you can head north up the Stratford Canal from Wootton Wawen to the canalside village of Lapworth.
If you are on a week's break you can continue on to complete the Birmingham Mini Ring, cruising through the heart of Birmingham, which famously has more canals than Venice. The route takes around 35 cruising hours and passes through 83 locks.
If you've booked a 10-day or two-week break from Wootton Wawen, you can complete the Warwickshire Ring, which cruises sections of the Grand Union, Oxford, Coventry and Birmingham & Fazeley canals. Highlights include: Gas Street Basin in Birmingham City Centre; the pretty canal village of Braunston; the awesome flight of 21 locks at Hatton; and Warwick Castle. From Wootton Wawen, it takes 59 cruising hours to complete the Warwickshire Ring, passing through 128 locks.
Or you can cruise the Avon Ring, which navigates sections of the River Avon, River Severn, Worcester & Birmingham Canal and Stratford Canal. You'll pass through Stratford upon Avon, Evesham and Tewkesbury, and you'll navigate the Tardebigge flight of locks, which with 30 locks in the row is the longest in the country. The Avon Ring navigates a 109 mile circuit, through 131 locks and takes around 58 cruising hours.
Day boat hire is also available from Wootton Wawen, with prices starting at £99 for a boat for up to 10 people. If you are new to canal boating, it's a great way to test the waters and learn the ropes, as tuition is included.
