As part of our 'Stepping Through The Past' collaboration with Ian Braisby, this is a chance to explore how Birmingham got it's branding as the 'City of a thousand trades'.

Birmingham has a manufacturing history dating back to medieval times and was one of the world's first industrial cities. On this walking tour, we will be exploring some of that history and how manufacturing turned a tiny village into a major global city. From the very earliest manufacturers, to the key figures of the industrial revolution, to the modern day, we will be finding out just why Birmingham became known as "The Workshop Of The World" and "City of A Thousand Trades" and how that legacy continues to shape its development today.

Following the walking tour, you'll receive a tour of the preserved manufactory of just one of those thousand trades: coffin furniture. Discovering how this Victorian factory developed into the world-class business it became, even supplying the royal undertakers with coffin handles, ornaments and shrouds for the best part of a century.

This package tour includes:
1pm – 3pm, City of a Thousand Trades walking tour [meet on Broad Street, at the Black Sabbath Bridge]
3pm – 3.30pm, Cuppa and cake in the Coffin Works' Casting Shop Cafe [A hot/cold drink and a cake included per ticket]
3.30pm – 4.45pm, A full guided tour of the Coffin Works itself
