Reuben Colley Fine Art - Spring Exhibition

About

Queer artists are the focus in Reuben Colley Fine Art's vibrant spring exhibition, which runs until 1st June 2019. The show will be open throughout Birmingham Pride weekend on 25th and 26th May and in celebration we will be serving champagne at the gallery on both days.

The exhibition features work by LGBT artists from the 1970s to the present day. Andy Warhol led a flamboyantly gay lifestyle at a time when prevailing attitudes forced many LGBT people into the 'closet'. His striking portraits of Mick Jagger and Ingrid Bergman hang alongside his colourful take on a 1960s Volkswagen advertisement. Keith Haring began his career as a street artist in New York, and developed a distinctive visual language. A prominent campaigner for gay rights, Haring set up a foundation to support young people with HIV. RCFA is displaying two of Haring's dynamic lithographs, both made during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Roxana Halls paints women who defy convention. A lesbian artist with a strong feminist sensibility, Halls has collaborated with other queer artists on recent exhibitions, and has won numerous awards. The whole of RCFA's lower gallery is dedicated to a display of Halls' work, in which women laugh in bizarre situations, eat with their mouths open and ignore the restrictions often placed upon women's behaviour.

Grayson Perry's penchant for cross-dressing came to public notice when he won the Turner Prize in 2003. In his art, his writing and his film-making, Perry has explored the nature of masculinity and gender identity. His self-portrait 'Reclining Artist' shows him as a full-frontal nude, combining the sexual characteristics of himself and his wife.

The spring exhibition runs until 1st June 2019.
