Online Lecture: Queer Art Through Queer Eyes

About

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is home to some of the UK's most beautiful LGBTQ+ art treasures. These artworks offer a fascinating glimpse into queer life beyond the binary. Each are ripe to explore the emotion of how Queer artists see others and themselves.

Join us for an emotive deep dive into a virtual collection of Queer art. Leading artists in history and today combine to tell a powerful story of the queer gaze.

How did queer artists communicate with their audience before partial decriminalisation? What happens when a Queer body is pictured by another Queer person? How powerful is the inherited narrative of the LGBTQ+ community as 'victims' in art?

Finally, we look at Queer reclamation. Massive gaps exist in collections and art history on the intersections of identity that exist beyond the heteronormative. What happens when artists reimage the past to build a visual Queer future?

Join arts educator and historian Jon Sleigh (he/him) in a warm online space to explore these ideas through great art. This value led session is a great space to meet others, discover artwork you may not have already seen, and be part of powerful storytelling.

This lecture contains some strong adult themes and is therefore only available to over 18s only.

This online lecture will be delivered via Zoom. Once you have signed up to the lecture, a unique invite will be sent for an online Zoom webinar, along with instructions of how to log on.
