Online Lecture: JRR Tolkien - The Landscape of Memory

About

This lecture will consider just how much the early landscape of his childhood influenced J.R.R Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and why did a small hamlet just outside of Birmingham, with its corn mill and green fields and woods hold such a great influence over the author?

How much can this small rural idyll can be claimed as the inspiration for The Shire? We will also look at how memory place also shaped Tolkien's world as well as the destruction of his childhood home and the profound impression it made on him.

This lecture will be delivered by Wayne Dixon, Museum Team Manager, Sarehole Mill. Wayne has developed and led Tolkien walks around the Sarehole area since 2009.

This online lecture will be delivered via Zoom. Once you have signed up to the lecture, a unique invite will be sent for an online Zoom webinar, along with instructions of how to log on.
