Trentham Gardens

Visit Trentham Gardens with its vast perennial plantings providing breath-taking vistas that change throughout the seasons. This stunning contemporary revival of an historic garden is amongst the very best in the UK. Encompassing 725 acres, take a stroll around the mile long lake, through the woodlands and parklands.

The gardens have been transformed over the last 15 years and are now some of the some of the finest in Britain with the revival being led by multi-Chelsea gold-medal winner Tom Stuart-Smith. The Italian Garden planting is designed within the historic framework of Sir Charles Barry’s original Italianate Garden of the 19th Century and the transformation was one of the largest contemporary perennial plantings in Europe. The renowned Dutch plantsman and Chelsea gold-medal winner, Piet Oudolf, has designed the Rivers of Grass and Floral Labyrinth that sit to the east of the Italian Gardens.

This fantastic revival of the gardens led the Telegraph newspaper to describe Trentham Gardens as ‘The garden makeover of the decade’ and collect an abundance of awards including being awarded including a Gold Accolade by Visit England in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Lakeside activities

The gardens lie against a backdrop of historic parkland and Capability Brown designed lake where you can enjoy the circular lakeside walk all the way round as it takes you aside the River Trent, by the bird hide, through the cascading weir and along atmospheric trails, featuring vast meadow schemes by Nigel Dunnett and the team who were responsible for the stunning wildflower plantings at the Olympic Park. Keep your eyes peeled for the magical fairies as you walk along the lake and through the woodland, maze and gardens. Spend time relaxing on the lake and set sail on Trentham’s electrically powered Miss Elizabeth or jump aboard the miniature railway, the Trentham Fern, which travels alongside the lake on a light gauge railway.

Adventure Play

Within Trentham Gardens lies a child’s paradise! For the young and young at heart, get naked from the knees down and take the UK's first barefoot walk and tantalise your toes as you walk through the mud, pebbles, bark, and streams. Hide and ‘speak’ in the maze, and swing into action in the adventure playground where children can tackle the assault course, climb nets, fly down the zip wire, build castles in the sand pits, and test out their driving skills. For younger kids the toddler zone provides a wonderful natural and nautical theme, including boats that sail on a sea of sand!
