The Kingsway open air market in Kings Heath is calling out for Birmingham shoppers to “support local market traders and artisans” on the run up to Christmas Day – as people across the city make their last dash for presents.

This weekend marks the final few days before Christmas and a notoriously busy time for Birmingham’s retail outlets – as people scour the city for gifts and accessories ahead of the big day.

But many local market traders and artisans have struggled to stay in business throughout 2021, with thousands of Christmas consumers choosing to buy online due to Covid restrictions – or simply wanting to avoid the crowds and busy shopping centres.

The next ten days are crucial for many local retailers, as they keep festive fingers crossed for increased trade and footfall on the last few shopping days before 25 December.

But from chocolates to cheeses and pottery to pashminas, everything sold at The Kingsway open air market comes from Birmingham based traders and artisans – with organisers hoping people will “look local for their last minute Christmas inspiration” this year.

The Kingsway hosts regular night markets every Thursday (5pm to 1pm) and day markets every Saturday (10am to 5pm) – with an additional Christmas market being held on Sunday 19 December.

There is also a final Christmas night market at The Kingsway on Thursday 23 December (5pm to 10pm) for people looking for that special last minute gift.

100% of stall holders at The Kingsway are local creatives, artisans, and traders – offering a unique range of local arts, crafts, and produce.

Stall holders include local chocolatiers Dads Bonbons, jewellery makers Working Clasp, bespoke earrings from Sista Sista, fine artisan cheesemakers ¡Queso!, Sundragon Community Pottery, Phillip Brewer Designs, and handmade headbands from Urban Garlands – with new Birmingham based traders joining each week.

“The Kingsway open air market is 100% local traders and creatives,” told Eddie O'Callaghan from The Kingsway, “everything being sold here has been made or sourced by Birmingham businesses.

“Doing your Christmas shopping at The Kingsway is a great way to support local market stall holders and artisans – something we’d be really keen to see more of this winter season.

“We launched The Kingsway during the pandemic and have been doing everything we can to support local traders, many of whom have struggled to survive all the lockdowns and restrictions. Now we’re facing the last few shopping days before Christmas and an important time for our market stall holders, who have suffered more than the large High Street shops during the pandemic.

“We really hope people will look local for their last minute Christmas inspiration and come and check out all the fantastic and unique gifts on offer at The Kingsway open air market.

“Alongside all the stalls and entertainment, there’s a big area for people to sit, eat, and relax, with heaters keeping us warm and cosy no matter whatever the weather.

“The Kingsway is also very experienced at operating under Covid safe conditions, something that can get lost in the hustle and bustle of a busy shopping centre.”

Food and drink offerings are available at The Kingsway, alongside a well heated seating area and toilet facilities for customers.

The Kingsway open air market is free to enter, running every Thursday (5pm to 10pm) and Saturday (10am to 5pm) with an additional Christmas market on Sunday 19 December – dogs are welcome. For more on The Kingsway visit https://www.facebook.com/atthekingsway/
