Who doesn’t love an Advent calendar? Opening the window every morning to reveal a festive chocolate or a little gift is an exciting way to build up to the Big Day.

At Selfridges Birmingham, there are myriad advent calendars for all members of the family - for foodies, beauty lovers, for children and for those who enjoy a little tipple - and the premium Bullring department store has some of the best selections in the city.

Food and drink

Lindt has a traditional chocolate advent calendar (£9.99), with a delicious piece of creamy Swiss chocolate behind each door, while sweet lovers could indulge in the Bamboozled jellybean advent calendar from Jelly Belly (£15.99) - packed with weird and wild flavours, you never know what you will get: a sweet treat or a sour jelly.

You might find it difficult to restrict your intake to one chocolate a day with the advent calendar from Italian chocolatier Venchi, which has hidden its best bite-sized cocoa creations behind each door.

Foodie indulgences include Selfridges’ exclusive Livia’s Indulgence with Bells On (£39.99) advent calendar, which is packed with vegan and gluten-free treats, including million squares, nugglets and dunx packet. The department store’s ever-popular Mince Pie (£35) calendar also returns with new flavours to savour.

Have a tea lover in your life? This English Tea Shop organic tea advent calendar (£9.99) with 25 aromatic and unusual blends to enjoy is ideal - blends include gingerbread treat; punchy peppermint; festive spice - a seductive blend of organic black tea with cinnamon, orange, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg and pepper; and Happy Holiday, which blends organic green tea with cinnamon, pomegranate, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg and pepper.

Fancy something a little stronger? Drinks by the Dram has collected the best bourbons in miniature form and hidden them behind 24 doors for its Bourbon advent calendar (£150). Try them in cocktails or on the rocks.

If your prefer whisky, Drinks by the Dram has produced a fabulous whisky advent calendar (£150), which has 24 30ml wax-sealed specially curated whiskies hidden from 21 distilleries in eight countries behind the windows, including single malt, blended and bourbon.

Go old school with an AG Holly and the Ivy advent candle (£8) or the Santa Sleigh advent candle designed by illustrator Alison Gardiner (£8).

Alison Gardiner has also designed traditional pictorial advent calendars - the Old Town at Christmas (£14) calendar is a delightful A3 picture with 24 doors that show a grand old Tudor house, a Christmas tree, a snowman, a red post box, musicians, a town crier and Santa Claus himself riding through the sky with his reindeers.

Children

LEGO® Harry Potter™ 2019 advent calendar (£25) is a fun and interactive way for children to count down to Christmas. It contains several mini figures with 24 buildable surprises and 24 secret compartments.
