Birmingham’s on track for the Commonwealth Games 2022
We love a bit of sport here in Birmingham. Every year we welcome teams from across the globe, and thousands of their supporters, to take part in the world’s best and biggest sporting events. From athletics to cricket, tennis to rugby, Birmingham has hosted them all.
Sitting at the heart of the UK, and standing for the diversity of the Commonwealth, Birmingham is well positioned to attract people to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and to ensure that the benefits of hosting extend from the city and region, to the UK and the Commonwealth.
Birmingham has a track record of delivering large international sporting events, including the ICC Champions Trophy and The Ashes at Edgbaston; Rugby World Cup fixtures at Villa Park; and with 95% of the competition venues already in place, Birmingham 2022 has adopted a prudent and innovative approach to creating a low cost, low risk, high quality Games.
There have been four indoor arenas selected in the Birmingham and Solihull area that will play a pivotal role in delivering its Commonwealth Games 2022 bid
The NEC's largest halls will host Boxing, Judo, Table Tennis and freestyle Wrestling
Barclaycard Arena will host Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics
Genting Arena will host Badminton
Symphony Hall will host Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting
Birmingham is the youngest major city in Europe. It’s as vibrant and diverse as the Commonwealth itself. So let’s all back the bid and bring the Commonwealth Games to Birmingham.
