From regal arcades to pop-up store delights, Birmingham's growing independent shopping scene has so much on offer it will have you coming back for more.
The Great Western Arcade
Within this majestic 1876 parade, independent boutique-style retailers, genuine specialists and a sprinkling of high street names give discerning shoppers the feel that beautiful discoveries await behind every door.
From Chouchoute Chocolaterie for your bespoke chocolate needs, Miss Macaroon for those extra special edible treats, wine sampling in the award winning Loki Wine shop, to cutting edge retailers like premium street and skatewear store Projekt21, The Great Western Arcade is a treasured arcade you'd be silly not to explore.
Just off New Street, Piccadilly Arcade is famous for its hand-painted ceilings and independent specialist retailers.
Retailers include the likes of Onyx Workshop and Piccadilly Jewellers, both of whom deal in high quality jewellery, where you’ll find experienced staff to help guide you through your purchase here. Drop into Smithsonia for some original and delightful gift ideas, or why not say it with flowers at Petals of Piccadilly? Or for a pampered experience, head to Finishing Touches for a range of hair and beauty treatments or to Marco Benito’s nail bar.
Just look for the Burlington Hotel next to Apple on New Street, and you’ll find this elegant little arcade.
Inside you’ll find Bad Apple Hair, one of our many cutting-edge stylists in the city, Crockett & Jones, a bespoke shoe shop, plus the stylish retailer, Onu, with up to date fashion picks for both men and women. And underneath all this, Bacchus Bar, named after the Roman god of wine and intoxication, is one of the city centre’s best kept secrets for good food and drink.
A connecting route between Grand Central and the Bullring, LinkStreet, coined as 'Birmingham's Carnaby Street', is an innovative home to Birmingham's ever-growing independent scene.
It welcomes unique shops you won’t find elsewhere in the region, and the interchanging pop-up stores mean a visit to LinkStreet won’t ever be the same. Vincent Van Doodle is a favourite amongst many, which started as a kiosk but has moved on up (cue Curtis) with permanent LinkStreet residence, making it your go to for niche buys like artistic icon memorabilia.
In the heart of Birmingham's vibrant creative quarter, the iconic Custard Factory is home to independent shops, hair and beauty salons, cafes, bars, an independent cinema/theatre and a packed programme of weekend fairs festivals and events.
Full of character and urban charm, the Custard Factory is set in a beautifully restored collection of riverside Victorian factories in which Alfred Bird once invented and manufactured his instant eggless custard. As well as providing key office space for creatives, there are shops to suit all ages and budgets, ranging from vintage fashion and modern independent fashion labels to high end jewellery, art, collectibles, homeware and cosmetics.
Handmade Birmingham Crafts Market
At the gateway to the Bullring, one of Europe’s largest shopping centres, local artists are innovating new and more entrepreneurial ways to present and sell their work. ‘Handmade Birmingham’ runs during the year along Edgbaston Street. See our What’s On calendar for the next event.
