Literature and poetry
Birmingham's writing scene is thriving - Birmingham’s current Poet Laureate Stephen Morrison-Burke was the youngest person to be awarded the title while Rem Conway has became one of the city’s youngest authors.
Spoken word and poetry slams are big in the city with collective Write Down Speak Up providing a platform for young talent...
Rem Conway - Author
He may still be in his teens but Rem Conway has already achieved more than many who are twice his age.
He’s written his first book and set up his own production company and if that wasn’t enough, he’s staged his own Jamaican-style comedy play at 'The Drum'. Through his work, Rem wants to influence more young people – especially young men – to read more. He believes that everyone has a story to tell and everyone has a book inside of them and is capable of producing it.
Ben Norris – Poet/Playright
Ben Norris is the Literary Events Officer for Writers’ Bloc, the University of Birmingham’s Creative Writing Society, and hosts two poetry nights in the city: Scribble Kicks, a night of page poetry and prose readings, and Grizzly Pear, a performance poetry extravaganza.
In addition to this, Ben organises inter-University poetry slams. He represented Birmingham in the inaugural UK Team Poetry Slam, picking up bronze, and joined a select Apples and Snakes team at Bristol Poetry Festival, taking home another bronze medal. Ben has also won the coveted ‘Golden Gun’ in the Bang Said The Gun show at Ledbury Poetry Festival.
Laura Dedicoat - Poetry and Spoken Word
Laura is curator of Level Up, a project being instigated by Write Down Speak Up to provide a platform for the growing desire amongst young people for poetry and spoken word and to create a space where young people can share and develop their writing and performance.
The monthly event is designed specifically for teenagers and aims to shine a spotlight on voices that would otherwise be unheard. Alongside the up-and-coming teen talent, leading UK spoken-word artists will also be invited to the city to perform with the youngsters. This will be a unique opportunity for new talent to speak to experts in the field, share knowledge and be on the same bill as them, something which Laura says is ‘a real honour.’
