Sanctuary Bar and Restaurant
Newman’s on-site bar is open every evening during term-time and is at the centre of university social events. The bar hosts a variety of events, from live band nights to talent shows, theme nights to sports presentations, there’s enough variety in the bar entertainment to suit everyone’s tastes. Friday night is normally a themed party night with entertainment and bar until 2am.
If you just want to meet and chat with friends on the comfy sofas, watch the TV, have a game of pool or chill out in the Sanctuary Garden then this is the place to go. It is open as a social space even when the bar is closed.
Newman’s Students’ Union is there to support you throughout your time at university, to represent you and to look after your welfare. In addition, the Newman SU run a range of sports clubs and societies that anyone can get involved in, and if you’re interested in setting up your own society they will give you all of the support that you need to do that too.
Entertainment is also arranged in conjunction with the Students’ Union, with Freshers’ Week helping to break the ice between new students and helping you to make new friends. Other highlights of the entertainment calendar include Christmas and Summer Balls, as well as a range of theme nights.
Whether you want to compete at the highest level or just play for fun with your friends, the sports facilities are open to all students. If competitive sport is your thing, our men's and women's football, basketball and badminton, men's cricket, and women's hockey and netball teams compete at the highest level within the British Universities Sports Championships.
