National Sea Life Centre's Walk-Through Piranha Tunnel
A jaw-dropping new attraction is coming to Birmingham’s National Sea Life Centre this February, as the attraction prepares to open a walk-through tunnel filled with fearsome red-bellied piranhas. Visitors to the aquarium will be able to get face to fin to the notorious snapping creatures as they venture through the rainforest in a spectacular new walk-through experience.
“The new piranha encounter will appeal to the explorer in all of us,”
explained the aquarium’s curator, Jonny Rudd.
“It’s a real jungle expedition through the mysterious waters of the rainforest, and you’ll get a close encounter with some of the Amazon’s most formidable creatures – if you’re brave enough!”
In a feeding frenzy a shoal of piranhas can reduce an entire animal carcass to a clean skeleton in a matter of minutes.
“You can rest assured we’ll be very careful with our fingers at feeding time!”
Despite their fearsome reputation, piranhas are threatened in the face of environmental issues due to their habitat. Living in freshwater rivers, the silver scaled creatures typically live in water ranging between 23 and 27 °C. The red-bellied piranha in particular is widely distributed across the South American continent, meaning it is subject to the threats currently facing the Amazon rainforest including illegal logging, damming and mining pollution.
Visitors to the attraction will have the opportunity to learn more about the difficulties creatures like piranhas are facing as a result of global issues, and how Sea Life is campaigning to help conserve species for future generations.
The new piranha tunnel walk-through experience will be opening late February 2018 at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, and will be included with all entry tickets. For further information or to book tickets please visit www.sealife.co.uk/birmingham.
