Who said penguins can’t fly?

New additions from Canada join the Gentoo penguin colony at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham

After migrating 4,268 miles from Calgary, a group of feathered additions have arrived at their icy new home at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham.

The Canadian colony of male and female Gentoos will join the current Midland residents at the attraction’s Penguin Ice adventure exhibit, a cool enclosure that provides a real insight into the lives and quirky habits of the world’s fastest underwater swimming penguins.

The birds, which are classified as near-threatened on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, have been bred together at Calgary Zoo and will be introduced to Sea Life Birmingham’s established colony as part of the attraction’s Breed, Rescue, Protect programme.

Amy Langham, General Manager at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham comments: “There’s been a lot of excitement around the arrival of the new penguins and it’s great to see them in good health and getting used to their new home here.

“Our new additions are aged between one and nine years old, which is great, as it’s vitally important for penguin colonies to have birds that are a mixture of ages, particularly when it comes to breeding, as the juveniles learn everything from watching the adults.

“It goes without saying that these new waddling additions will be firm favourites with both staff and visitors alike, as our current Gentoo penguins have already demonstrated – they’re just so charismatic and endearing, you can’t take your eyes off them!”

Penguin Ice Adventure takes visitors on an expedition into the rarely seen Antarctic landscape, where multiple viewing platforms allow guests to see the endearing creatures waddling about their icy home and diving into the water as many as 450 times a day!

The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham transports visitors to an amazing underwater world, where they get to see incredible sea life from all over the planet, from the coast of Britain and the chilly Antarctic, to the tropical waters of the Caribbean.

The aquarium is home to over 2,000 creatures, such as sharks, as well as a rescued Giant Green Sea Turtle, jellyfish, piranha, octopus and rays.
