The World no. 3, Simona Halep confirmed to play Aegon Classic Birmingham

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has confirmed today that world No.3 Simona Halep will play at the Aegon Classic Birmingham in June.

Halep has had a fantastic start to the 2015 season including the biggest title of her career at Indian Wells in March. She will play on the grass courts of the Edgbaston Priory Club, a WTA Premier tournament, for the first time as part of her preparations for The Championships, Wimbledon.

The Aegon Classic Birmingham, one of the WTA Premier events on the world tour, will take place from 15-21 June 2015 and forms an integral part of the new British grass court season, which in 2015 will see a three week window between Roland Garros and Wimbledon for the very first time. The extended grass court season will enable some of the world’s very best players extra time to find their feet on grass and make the most of the very best grass courts in the country.

Speaking on the announcement the 2014 French Open finalist, Simona said:

This is my first time playing at the Aegon Classic Birmingham. I’m really excited about the tournament and I’m looking forward to getting some great support. It means a lot to me to be playing in a tournament which has so many big champions in its history. I really enjoy playing on grass. It’s a fast surface that suits my game style. I had a fantastic grass court season last year and hope to have more successes in 2015.

The Aegon Classic Birmingham, Tournament Director, Patrick Hughesman, said:

We are delighted that Simona has committed to playing the Aegon Classic Birmingham this year. She is a rising star of the sport and is one of the best players in the world. Her excellent breakthrough season in 2014, reaching the final of the French Open, really marked her card as a world class player and she has started this year in excellent form. Simona joins an already impressive player field including our defending champion Ana Ivanovic, and we look forward to announcing more players soon.

David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer at Aegon said:

Simona Halep is one of the biggest names in women’s tennis and to have her playing the Aegon Birmingham Classic is fantastic news for the tournament. As the world No.3 she highlights the status that this tournament has in the tournament calendar. We are delighted that she has chosen the event as part of her grass court season and look forward to seeing her on the fantastic courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club in June.

Tickets for the tournament are on sale now. An early bird discount will apply to all adult tickets bought before 28 April.
