‘Sport Birmingham’ working to change attitude towards physical activity and tackle rising obesity levels
Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership has evolved to gain independent charity status and will be known as Sport Birmingham, following the launch event on Thursday 31st July, in the company of the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and special guests from across the City.
As one of 45 County Sports Partnerships throughout England that receives core funding and support from Sport England, Sport Birmingham works to motivate and inspire the local community to lead a more active lifestyle.
The charity is aware of the huge challenge ahead with 51% of Birmingham adults still not taking part in any sport or physical recreation and young people’s obesity levels above the national average. One of the priorities of the organization is to continue to raise awareness of sporting opportunities in the area and the benefits of participation. It will seek to do so through new partnerships with business, health, education and community groups as well as the many National Governing Bodies of Sport who have identified Birmingham as a priority.
Mike Chamberlain, Sport Birmingham Chief Executive said:
It's been a long journey and the culmination of a great deal of hard work by a lot of people. The launch of Sport Birmingham celebrates the beginning of a new independent company and charity to be the County Sports Partnership for Birmingham. We aim to harness the power of sport and physical activity to improve lives across the City, by working with our many partners in sport and health locally and nationally, in particular Birmingham City Council and Sport England. Exciting times are ahead as we look to make a real difference by building on the Olympic legacy to help inspire new generations and make sport and activity a habit for life.
Sport Birmingham continues to work to overcome the barriers preventing participation into sport and physical activity, to encourage investment into communities in the area and ultimately make Birmingham a more active and healthy place to live, learn and work.
