More than 10,000 sign up for next month's Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run

More than 10,000 people have now signed up for next month’s Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run, it has been revealed.

Taking place on Sunday, October 15, the same day as the now sold-out Birmingham International Marathon, the city's annual half marathon is proving as popular as ever and attracting runners of all abilities.

Half marathon runners will start in Jennens Road and take in sights such as Selfridges, Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston Stadium and Bournville, before finishing back in the city centre in front of thousands of supporters.

Anyone signing up for the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run will get a guaranteed entry window to next year's Birmingham International Marathon, which sold out its 9,000 general entry places for the 2017 run four months before it is due to take place.

The business world can play its part in the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run half marathon with the Arcadis Business Challenge inviting firms of all shapes and sizes from across the Midlands to compete for fastest-time trophies and all-important bragging rights.

Among those taking part in the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run is 33-year-old teacher Stuart Warner who, just two years ago, tipped the scales at 25st 5lbs and has since lost over six stone and shed ten inches from his waist.

Stuart reckons getting into running has ‘probably saved his life’ and he amazed himself by completing his first-ever running event, the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k, in April.

The half marathon is without doubt my biggest challenge yet,

he said.

And a sports charity worker who hails from Worcestershire but now lives in Argentina will be returning to her Alvechurch roots to take part in this year’s Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run.

Laura Kyte has lived in Argentina since 2010, originally in the capital Buenos Aires, before moving to the Andes hill-town of Cachi, where she became a partner with UK charity Verité Sport which promotes a Christian presence in the world of athletics.

I always wanted to sign up for the Great Birmingham Run and I’m really excited to run around the streets of my home city, hopefully with plenty of support from family!

she said.
