Major jazz festival just got bigger
A leading British Jazz and Blues Festival is expanding to become The Birmingham and Solihull Jazz & Blues Festival, joining forces with Solihull BID to increase the profile of the event and bring more performances into Solihull. The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival is now in its 32nd year during which time it has presented more than 5800 performances to 2.5 million people.
The 2016 festival will take place from July 15th to 24th with bands and musicians from the UK, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Spain, Holland, Canada, India, Hungary and the USA. Performances will take place in some 60 venues with almost all of it free to the public.
The open-air Mell Square Stage will be at the heart of the Solihull activity, with eight shows over three days commencing on the eve of the festival [July 14th] and including Pepper & The Jellies from Italy, Les Zauto Stompers de Paris from France, The Broombusters from Birmingham and Solihull-born Andy Bennett from Ocean Colour Scene.
Melanie Palmer, Executive Director of Solihull Business Improvement District explained
From our experience in running our own annual Solihull Jazz Festival, we realised that there is a huge appetite for jazz in and around Solihull
I believe that the time is now right to engage with the long-established Birmingham event to produce a festival that will have a far greater footprint than would two separate festivals
Jazz & Blues Festival director Jim Simpson said
we’re delighted to welcome Solihull BID on board. The festival has long enjoyed a significant following in Solihull and their excellent Jazz Festival certainly built on that, so it seems eminently logical to move forward with Solihull taking its proper place in this well-established and important festival
The 32nd Birmingham and Solihull Jazz & Blues Festival will present around 150 performances in 60 venues, almost all of it free and aiming to reach the 2015 audience figure of 94,351, which generated an economic benefit of £3.4m.
