Kung Hey Fat Choy - Selfridges prepares to welcome Chinese New Year
Selfridges Birmingham will be painting the store red to mark Chinese New Year next week as it plays host to the celebrations taking place in the city.
The Bullring department store will host two fantastic family events on Saturday, February 17, as the Chinese community gears up for the weekend of festivities.
Members of the Birmingham Conservatoire will stage three performances on levels 1 and 2 between 12.30pm and 1pm, with a quartet, a percussion duo and a classical pianist all playing pieces for customers.
And between 2pm and 2.30pm, in conjunction with the Birmingham Hippodrome and the Chinese New Year festival committee, the traditional lion dance will be in store to thrill customers - snaking through the store from the Moor Street entrance up to level 3, where it will perform a dance to bring good luck and fortune.
As families exchange gifts to mark the arrival of the year of the dog, Selfridges Birmingham will turn red - the colour that symbolises good luck in Chinese culture - and there are a host of present ideas for any member of the family.
Write your new year messages with a limited edition Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dog lacquer ballpoint pen from Cross (£208). Engraved with 23ct gold inlays, it is enhanced by a Swarovski crystal and comes with two refills and a branded holder.
A deluxe designer bag is a fabulous gift - and this Launer Traviata leather tote (£4,500) in red - of course! - is the ideal way to show your affection.
Continuing with the red theme, this Chloé cross-body bag (£1,340), which is a Selfridges exclusive, will take you through the seasons, while this classic Mulberry quilted bag (£950) - another exclusive to Selfridges - has dual carry options and its signature Postman’s lock.
Give your skin a real glow for the celebrations, with Giorgio Armani’s My Armani To Go iconic cushion palette (£60), which is exclusive to Selfridges, and add a slick of Dior Addict lip glow (£25) for up to six hours if kissable lips, thanks to the rich pigment colour and shine of a lacquer, plus the comfort of a balm.
YSL has also brought back its coveted Chinese New Year lip vault, just for Selfridges. Brimming with all the lip finishes you could ever desire from nude to dark red encased in a signature box, it features a selection of the label’s iconic Rouge Pur Couture Lipsticks, Tatouage Couture Liquid Lipsticks and Rouge Volupté Shine Lipsticks.
