Instagramers of Birmingham Exhibition
3 December, Nest, c/o Glen Howells Architects, 321 Bradford Street, Digbeth, B5 6ET
IGersBirmingham are holding their first exhibition on Saturday 3 December. It will feature images of Birmingham and the surrounding area.
IGersBirmingham was established in 2012 with the aim of developing an Instagram photography community in the city to promote photography in and of Birmingham. It is part of a global Instagramers (IGers) movement which was created with the aim of helping photographers to improve their skills via Instagram.
Today, IGersBirmingham has nearly 11,000 followers and is well recognised within the city through its daily “Photo of the Day” repost of a chosen image from the photos posted by the community. Around 150 images are posted to the hashtag (#igersbirmingham) each day, with over 105,000 posted in total. New Instagramers use the hashtag almost every day.
Crucial to the IGersBirmingham community is that it is also active offline, therefore members of the community regularly get together for events known as “instameets”. Anyone can attend regardless of their photography skill level, and whether they use a smartphone or a camera. Instameets take place at locations all across the city, often at the invitation of local organisations who wish to showcase themselves to new audiences via social media.
IGersBirmingham held 20 instameets in and around Birmingham in 2016, at locations such as the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham Midland Institute, Balsall Heath (in conjunction with the Ikon gallery’s Varna Road exhibition), the Lickey Hills, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Soho House Museum, and Spaghetti Junction. They have also worked with organisations such as JQ BID, Colmore BID, Visit Birmingham and local photographers such as Ross Jukes, Tim Cornbill and Verity Milligan. The largest instameet of 2016 involved 150 IGers at the City of Colours festival in Digbeth.
To celebrate this momentous year for the IGersBirmingham community, they will be holding a public exhibition, the first of its kind for a UK IGers community. The public are encouraged to visit to see a collection of excellent images from instameets and “Photo of the Day” posts featuring the city.
There will also be the opportunity to discover more about becoming part of the IGersBirmingham – as an Instagramer or as an organisation wishing to work with IGersBirmingham. The team behind the community, Fraser McGee, Beth Astington and Annabell Lamba, will be in attendance throughout the event.
