Instagram exhibition launches following Birmingham Instameet success
- Birmingham’s first official ‘Instameet’ event is led by photographer Tim Cornbill
- Ikon Gallery to exhibit images captured by city’s Instagrammers
Creative talent from across the city gathered to share pictures of Birmingham’s most prominent landmarks on photo sharing site Instagram, in the city’s first ever official Instameet.
A collection of the 500 images produced throughout the event are to be showcased from 27 – 29 November, at the internationally acclaimed Ikon Gallery, in a first-of-its-kind pop-up exhibition entitled ‘More Birmingham Instagram Showcase’.
The social media event which supported the hashtag #BrumMeetJan24, took place on Saturday 24th January and was led by Birmingham based photographer and architect Tim Cornbill, who shared his expertise with Instagrammers throughout the day. Hosted by the city’s official leisure tourism programme Visit Birmingham, the event marks the first of a series of Instameets that will take place in Birmingham throughout the year, which aim to highlight the city’s world-renowned landscape in order to entice more visitors from across the globe.
Emma Gray, Director of Marketing Services at Visit Birmingham, said:
Birmingham is generating more national and international interest than ever before. Social media platforms such as Instagram are a great way of reaching and engaging with millions of potential visitors worldwide, and providing them with a genuine insight into the city’s architecture, culture and its people.
We’re incredibly proud to be spearheading an event which highlights not only the city’s acclaimed landmarks but also its historical and cultural gems. From the old Birmingham Library to Fletchers Walk, Birmingham’s landscape will be changing over the course of 2015 so it’s the perfect opportunity to capture some of the city’s prized landmarks for the last time.
Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director, added:
The More Birmingham Instagram Showcase is the first of its kind for Ikon and the first ever ‘Insta-gallery’ to be hosted in Birmingham - a new adventure!
Public engagement and participation are the heart of Ikon, our gallery provides the ideal backdrop to showcase photography created by the public, for the public. This event will see passionate Instagrammers share the limelight alongside some of the world’s most prestigious artists - we hope this will inspire creativity amongst all those who that visit.
Birmingham’s first Instameet has placed particular focus on capturing some of the city’s key locations for the final time, following a year of city centre-wide transformation including the £500 million Paradise redevelopment. Chamberlain Square, Fletchers Walk, and the old Library of Birmingham were some of the venues central to the social event. 500 images taken throughout the Instameet were uploaded to Instagram with an image of Paradise Forum proving the most popular photo, generating more shares amongst Instagram’s 300 million users than any other image taken.
All images produced at the Instameet can be found on Instagram using the hashtag #BrumMeetJan24. For further information about upcoming Instameets in Birmingham, visit the Visit Birmingham Instagram page @Visit_Birmingham.
