Help Selfridges Birmingham be voted best landmark of 21st century
Proud Brummies are being called upon to help show-off one of our city’s landmark buildings, Selfridges, to the world in an international competition.
Run by British Airways’ in-flight magazine High Life, and in association with The Independent, the building which was inspired by a Paco Rabanne dress has been shortlisted to be in the running for the top 21 landmarks of the 21st century.
Editor of High Life, Kerry Smith, said:
Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Stonehenge are all iconic landmarks that have defined Britain for hundreds of years. But our skyline is evolving at an unprecedented pace – we want to find out how these traditional architectural pieces resonate with our readers, or if innovative new structures are capturing imaginations across the country.
By submitting votes on highlife.ba.com/21landmarks, Brummies will be able to nominate the Selfridges building. The list of nominated landmarks will then be put to a panel of experts including architects, historians, commentators and journalists from across Britain to determine the final 21 landmarks.
The final chosen landmarks will be published in the August issue of High Life as part of a wider feature.
From the reader submissions, a winner will be selected at random to enjoy an overnight stay for two at the ultimate London landmark hotel, Claridge’s, dinner at Fera, and breakfast.
Deputy general manager of Selfridges, Sam Watts, said:
The building really does light-up the Birmingham skyline and visitors to our city make a bee-line towards it as it is such an iconic building. It would be a great honour for us to be voted one of the best landmarks of the 21st Century so we just hope to get lots of people voting and putting us forward.
