Hatters Hostel Birmingham shortlisted at 2016 British Youth Travel Awards
Hatters Hostel Birmingham has been shortlisted in the Best Accommodation category at the 2016 British Youth Travel Awards.
The venue, based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, will battle with Mrs Potts Backpackers (Cardiff) and Palmers Lodge Swiss Cottage (London) for the crown, which will be awarded on Monday 5 December at London’s Ham Yard Hotel.
Inspired by Birmingham’s recent tourism revival – which has included a 16% increase in domestic tourists since 2010 and more than one million international visitors last year – Hatters Hostel has played a leading role in attracting youth tourism to the city. Since taking over the Vaughton Gothic Works, the former Victorian silversmiths, which famously produced the original FA Cup and 1908 Olympic medals, the hostel has given the venue a new lease of life, with a refurbishment that respects the building’s history and provides Birmingham with youth sector-focussed accommodation.
Youth travel is the fastest-growing sector of the industry. A recent study shows that the inbound UK youth, student and educational travel market is currently worth in excess of £20 billion to the UK economy, amounting to more than a third of the revenue of the country’s entire travel market
The British Youth Travel Awards aim to reward high achievers, gain recognition, and raise the profile of the work and individual successes of organisations engaged in youth, student and educational travel, to, from and within the UK.
