Happy Father’s Day Dad, bet you’re glad you’re not a Seahorse!
Show dads just how easy they’ve had it this Father’s Day weekend with a visit to the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, where you can find the male Seahorses who truly deserve a day of family celebration – they bear the children!
That’s right, if there’s a dad out there who has really earned his breakfast in bed and a nice card and prezzie, it’s the humble male Seahorse, who carries and gives birth to up to a thousand Seahorse babies at a time.
In fact, the male incubates the female’s eggs in a special stomach pouch for around 25 days. He does, however, enjoy lots of loving attention from the mother, who checks on the babies regularly.
There are 54 species of Seahorse, scientifically known as Hippocampus, which comes from the Ancient Greek words hippos meaning "horse" and kampos meaning "sea monster".
Your Dad may be a superhero, but - as Mum likely enjoys reminding him - he’s never had to go through the stress of childbirth. That’s real fatherly dedication!
Sea Life Birmingham’s Chris Coventry, said:
We love looking at our spectacular little Seahorses here at the aquarium and always spare a thought for the males on Father’s Day for their extra commitment to family life. We look forward to spotting dads paying their little tributes this weekend and nodding in appreciation of the extra mile these wonderful creatures go to.
