Former Wolrd no.1 Victoria Azarenka and Lucie Safarova bolster world class player field for Aegon Classic Birmingham

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has confirmed today that former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka and current world No.13 Lucie Safarova will play at the Aegon Classic Birmingham in June.

Azarenka, the two-time Australian Open champion, and Safarova, Wimbledon 2014 semi-finalist, will join an impressive field that already includes, defending champion Ana Ivanovic and the in-form, French Open semi-finalist, Simona Halep.

The Aegon Classic Birmingham, one of the WTA Premier events on the world tour, will take place from 15-21 June 2015 and forms an integral part of the new British grass court season, which in 2015 will see a three week window between Roland Garros and Wimbledon for the very first time. The extended grass court season will enable some of the world’s very best players extra time to find their feet on grass and make the most of the very best grass courts in the country.

Speaking on the announcement Azarenka, the Belarus star said:

This is my first time playing at the Aegon Classic Birmingham. I always love coming to Britain for the grass court tournaments. There is always a unique atmosphere here and the fans are so passionate. I have heard great things about Birmingham and the tournament, and I’m really looking forward to playing.

The Aegon Classic Birmingham, Tournament Director, Patrick Hughesman, said:

Vika and Lucie are fantastic additions to the player field for this year’s Aegon Classic Birmingham. Vika is a star of Women’s tennis and a name that many will recognise from her Grand Slam successes.

He added:

Lucie is one of the inform players on the tour right now, playing some of the best tennis of her career and we are delighted to have her back at the Edgbaston Priory Club. She had a great run at Wimbledon after playing here last year, reaching the semi-finals and finished 2014 in style as part of the Fed Cup winning Czech Republic team. We are delighted to welcome both of these players to the Aegon Classic Birmingham.

David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer at Aegon said:

It is fantastic news that Vika and Lucie have chosen the Aegon Classic Birmingham as part of their preparations for The Championships, Wimbledon. To have a two time Grand-Slam champion in Vika is a great endorsement for the tournament.  Lucie is a tremendous talent on the tour and with 6 WTA titles to her name she will further bolster the strength of the player field. We are delighted that they have chosen the event as part of their grass court season and we wish them both the best of luck on the fantastic courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club in June.

Tickets for the tournament are on sale now. An early bird discount will apply to all adult tickets bought before 28 April.
