Celebrate the Chinese New Year in Style at Selfridges Birmingham - which will be turning red for luck to mark the day

It’s time to celebrate the Year of the Goat with a helping hand from Selfridges Birmingham, which will be turning red for luck to mark the day and help everyone welcome the New Year in with style.

The Chinese New Year is one of the most important dates in the Chinese calendar, and is one where many families celebrate with customs linked to food, decorations and gifts.

For those wanting to sample some delicious Chinese fare, Ekachai Noodle Bar in the Foodhall will be serving up a treat, and also helping some lucky diners pick up some special prizes.

During New Year, red envelopes (or ‘Hong Bau’) are given out to ensure good luck and prosperity for the months ahead. The red colour of the envelope is considered lucky and is believed to help ward-off evil spirits. The noodle bar will be giving away 1,500 of these to customers dining between Monday, 16th February to Sunday, 22nd February. One in four of the envelopes will contain a prize, ranging from a free bottle of wine to a complimentary meal for two.

With red symbolising the colour of luck, there are plenty more gifts on offer for the whole family to enjoy.

To make your lips even more kissable and vamp red, Charlotte Tilbury, who is exclusive in store, has her dazzling Kiss ‘N’ Tell lip liner (£16.50), while NARS matte lipstick is a must in Scarlett Empress (£19.50). The Suqqu balancing dual-palette cheek powder (£38) is a blusher compact duo that includes a natural cheek tone and a highlighter with red-gold micro-particles.

To help with the morning after the night before is the incredible Creme De La Mer illuminating eye gel (£100) and Estee Lauder Cyber White Extra Radiance Recovery Mask (£47). The Giorgio Armani Prive Suzhou eau de toilette 100ml (£100) has been released in store to celebrate Chinese New Year.  Inspired by the beautiful gardens of Asia, this scent opens with notes of juicy mandarin, pink pepper and raspberry, with floral base notes of peony enhanced with essences of rose, amber, musk and patchouli. To make this gift extra special, a professional calligraphy artist will be in store to write a personalised chinese message on a custom envelope on Level 4 between Wednesday, 18th and Thursday, 19th February.

For those who are wanting a tasty tipple or two, the Du Kang wine (£54.99) is steeped in Chinese history and is one of the most popular Baijiu on the market, while the Ish Gin (£39.99) is one of the best ways to explore the forbidden.

In Menswear, the Alexander McQueen Spine Card Holder (£95) elevates the humble card holder to levels of gothic elegance, while the Michael Kors leather bifold wallet (£85) is both sleek and sophisticated.

For ladies who can’t go without the latest handbag, the Valentino Rockstud lock mini clutch bag (£1,065) with its crafted smooth red leather and pyramid studs is a must and will statement any outfit.

Ruth Harris, general manager at Selfridges Birmingham, said: “Chinese New Year is a time of huge celebration, and we can’t wait to feel the buzz in our store. We are excited to see such an iconic building turn red and symbolise the bringing in of the new year.”
