Birmingham Royal Ballet's Anniversary gift to the city of Birmingham
Since 1990, Birmingham Royal Ballet has been proud to call the city of Birmingham home. 62,500 pointe shoes later, the Company has presented some 139 different ballets at Birmingham Hippodrome over the course of around 225 weeks of performances.
As an expression of gratitude to the city that became its home 25 years ago, Birmingham Royal Ballet is marking World Ballet Day by offering all Birmingham residents the chance to see their own ballet company live on stage. Beginning at 9am on Thursday October 1, the Company will open up online access to hundreds of free tickets for its autumn mixed bill programme, Variations, to the people of Birmingham.
Performing at Birmingham Hippodrome on October 8, 9, and 10, Variations is a program of three short works. One of them, George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations, was the very first ballet danced by Birmingham Royal Ballet after its permanent relocation to the city in 1990. It was originally created as the choreographer’s love letter to classical ballet, and the Company performs it now in celebration of the city’s 25 years of welcome and support.
Starting at 9am on Thursday October 1, Birmingham residents with a postcode beginning B are asked to head to www.brb.org.uk/thankyou where they will be required to fill out a short online form. Birmingham Royal Ballet will be giving away at least 250 tickets to the first applicants who submit their forms (limit two per person) with recipients being notified by email the following day.
The Company look forward to welcoming community members from all over the city of Birmingham to celebrate their 25th anniversary in style.
