Birmingham Airport welcomes city's bid for 2026 Commonwealth Games
Birmingham Airport has welcomed today’s news that Birmingham intends to bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
As the region’s largest airport, Birmingham Airport is well positioned to provide the connectivity to support such a prestigious event in the city, which would attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe and could generate £390m to the regional economy.
Paul Kehoe, the Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, said,
We fully support this decision to host the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and will be assisting our regional partners involved in pulling together the bid to show that Birmingham is the right choice for this major event in 2026.
Birmingham Airport currently serves 440 direct or one stop flights around the world and by 2026 will be the first UK airport served by HS2, growing the catchment and making access from the south east faster and easier.
We are focused on continuing to grow our route network, particularly to long haul destinations in order to serve the region’s business and leisure needs, so we anticipate that connectivity will continue to flourish, with more airlines realising the strength of the Midlands market and ease of flying through Birmingham.
We are therefore confident that in ten years’ time, we will be in an even stronger position to deliver the global connectivity for these games and I’m sure that the region will join me in backing this bid.
Birmingham has a successful track record of attracting major sporting events, having staged more than any other UK city. It is currently preparing for the 2018 World Indoor Athletics Championships.
