Waterloo - Promise to love you
for ever more
I have been invited to stay in the city’s newest apartments - No. 8 Waterloo Street Apartments – this is going to be a night to remember, they are uber plush…
Upon arrival and looking up at the exterior of this Grade II listed building, it reminds me of Sigourney Weaver’s (Dana Barrett’s) magnificent New York apartment in Ghostbusters; I hope that upon opening the fridge I am not met by a demonic dog snarling ‘ZUUL’, but milk...thankfully, it is proven to be the latter.
A summer storm is also due tonight, this image is in my head…
This is the reality….
On opening the enormous front door, I am met with an exquisite Art Deco lobby. Just look at this for a beautiful space…
Each apartment has been meticulously designed with each of the 31 rooms having their own unique décor – I am shown around several of these by Waterloo's lovely Sales Manager Rebecca, and can attest that it’s all true!
Each one had its own inimitable design, and no expense has been spared on the fixtures and fittings - I momentarily feel bad that I haven’t taken my shoes off – I am standing on a very nice rug.
This was my favourite room – why you ask? I appreciated the hand printed wallpaper and the orange and dark blue colour scheme.
After a whistle-stop tour I am taken to my room… fitting - after all my initials are PM!
My apartment is gorgeous too - is had a dusty pink / grey theme – take a look around...
The walls are adorned with pictures of Marilyn Monroe – this room has a very feminine aesthetic; this is one of the Luxury apartments - it is very spacious – I think I will be happy here.
There are wooden floors throughout. The swish swoo raidiators are all matched to the swish swoo paint. The bedroom wardrobes are all handmade, everything is top of the raaange. The walls are freshly painted, the smell of new upholstery reminds me of Lee Longlands – the building has only been open for 3 weeks – I may even be the first in number 10?
I loved the views out of the back of the building - industrial yes, but with charm nevertheless.
The kitchen is high-end, with all the amenities you would ever need (more than mine in fact) – especially for an extended stay – dishwasher, combi microwave over, bottle opener (phew!), double hob, fridge freezer.
Bar the bottle opener, I will use none of this tonight – I am in the heart of the city and it awaits…
The local vicinity is occupied by some of Birmingham’s finest eateries and bars including two of the five Michelin starred – Purnells and Adams. Unfortunately for moi, it is the night before payday, so I opt for a BBQ atop The Bureau Bar’s roof – this too is nothing to be sniffed at – the Bureau’s rooftop is a revelation and very welcome on this the hottest day of the year.
Also in the locale are Cosy Club – this is literally next door (don’t worry - no noise whatsoever), Buffalo & Rye, Bodega and the charming Old Joint Stock.
If I was on a leisure stay I would be very near to… well…. everything - shopping at the Bullring, Grand Central and Mailbox, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is within crawling distance – Cathedral Square is just... there…
Anyway back to the matter in hand – the apartment – No bus or Uber for me tonight – no sir! I am in the centre of the action! Unfortunately, I have noone to share this experience with (*sob*), so I retire to the apartment to lounge on the comfortable sofa and decide to make use of the large flat screen TV – I choose to watch a pointless remake of RoboCop and an episode of The Chase (it’s The Beast in case you were wondering who the chaser was).
I remember too late that this TV has Screen Mirroring for both the Apple and Android user and that movies are available- doh!
I turn off the TV and can hear the faint murmurings of the city below - and church bells – very nice, like Italy! Right I’m rambling - to bed!
The bed is hands down one of the comfiest I have ever had the pleasure of lying on and I am asleep within seconds. Unfortunately come daybreak this will be my downfall, and I will go on to snooze my phone alarm a record number of times – thankfully for me I am only a hop, skip and a jump away from The West Midlands Growth Company HQ (formally Marketing Birmingham) and can afford this extra time to lie down. I’m not ashamed to confess that I exclaim…aloud… to nobody but myself ‘Ahhh this is comfy’.
All good things must come to an end... but not just yet – I am now in the market for a ‘Rain’ Shower – a wet room with a shower whose head is 10 times bigger than mine at home. I utilize the complimentary White Company products to their full – yup even the hand cream – I forego the shower cap. It’s all as good as it sounds I won’t go into detail, just suffice to say I come out invigorated.
I iron my shirt. Make a cup of coffee with the futuristic kettle and leave with a heavy heart.
That night I return to my flat – it looks grot. I vow to take some interior design inspiration from the rooms I saw last night*
