The Nutcracker - our review
Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a truly festive treat for all members of the family.
During a party on Christmas Eve, Clara is given a magical Nutcracker toy. Creeping downstairs at midnight to play with her doll, she joins a world of toy soldiers, giant rats and snow fairies.
After saving her beloved Nutcracker from the King of the Rats, she is whisked away to an enchanted land and dances the night away in his arms, meeting a host of strange and exotic characters, before being transformed into a beautiful ballerina.
The incredible talent of the dancers shows why The Nutcracker is the most popular family Christmas show of all time. Céline Gittens gave a perfect performance as the Sugar Plum Fairy, while Momoko Hirata’s Rose Fairy seemed effortless.
The sequence when Clara shrinks to join the battle between the toy soldiers and rats, and the start of Act Two – when she rides through the clouds on a swan – have spectacular staging.
Anyone watching the Nutcracker for the first time will be surprised at how much of Tchaikovsky’s score they recognise, the different styles of dancing during the show, and the imaginative scenery – and then wonder why they never visited before.
The Nutcracker is at Birmingham Hippodrome until December 13th. For tickets, call 0844 338 5000 or visit www.birminghamhippodrome.com.
