Something for the weekend?
Each week our marketing team pick one thing they are doing in Birmingham and the region this weekend. Here are their selections for 26 - 28 January, hopefully you'll see something that inspires you, and if not, well there's always next week...
Mary's Pick - 'Coming Out: Sexuality, Gender and Identity' at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Art | Culture | Free
Here in Birmingham, we’re lucky to have a range of great museums and art galleries for when you’re in need of that fix of culture. This weekend, I want to go and check out the new exhibit at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
‘Coming Out: Sexuality, Gender and Identity’ marks 50 years since the Sexual Offences Act 1967 partially decriminalised male homosexual acts, and explores the themes of sexuality, gender and identity in the modern world. It features the work of some internationally renowned artists, including Andy Warhol, Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin. The exhibiton looks bright and bold, full of fun pop-art pieces.
There is nothing I like more than walking around an art exhibition, donning my art critic façade and throwing out artsy words I remember from the art GCSE years. The exhibition is on at BMAG until the 15th April, and is completely free! So there is literally no reason not to check it out. Have a look here!
Paul's Pick - mac Birmingham and Cannon Hill Park
Art | Outdoors | Family | £/££/£££
This weekend I’m shipping out to mac Birmingham and Cannon Hill Park. There are a number of reasons why this is so…
- My youngest daughter wants to take her dollies for a walk
- My oldest daughter wants to go on her new bike
- I want to sign up for an art class.
- I think it’s one of the best parks in Brum
Yup this location has a multitude of things going for it – the mac is such a great creative space and there is always something to view. The cinema shows a great program of independent film and the theatre has a fantastic roster of events for the kids.
The park too is super-duper – and when the kids get bored of pushing babies/ riding, there is also a better than your average funfair, a playground and a 2 -course crazy golf centre.
Also in this unpredictable climate I have the option to go indoors or out – everyone’s a winner!
Now, what course shall I enrol on? Have a look here!
Emily's Pick - The Edgbaston
Art-deco | Afternoon tea | ££
This weekend I will be frequenting one of the most beautiful art-deco haunts in Birmingham, The Edgbaston. Before Christmas I booked a slot for my mother, sisters and I to enjoy one of their renowned Afternoon Teas. It was booked as part of my Christmas present for old mother dearest, allowing me to fulfil my dutiful role as favourite daughter, but also a necessary gift from me to me as I’ve always ALWAYS wanted to enjoy an Afternoon Tea there. If their master mixologists and cocktails are anything to go by, it’s going to be a dry-ice infused fiesta for our taste buds. With a wide range of Afternoon Tea’s on offer, the ‘Moseley Serve’ sounds the most scrumptious. Legend has it, in the early 1900’s, ladies would visit each other’s houses in the area and have “tea” parties. Unbeknownst to their husbands, their teacups were merely vessels for their gin habits. Now that’s a tea party! For more info on their range of Afternoon Tea’s, see their website here.
