Friday treats at #LUNCHMARKET
As we were walking to the #LUNCHMARKET at The Square in Dale End, I thought to myself that it seemed a curious location for a street food setup; this is not an area of town that I would have naturally associated with a foodie crowd.
However, since my last visit some 20 years ago (I was a 16 year old hanging/moping out in The Oasis Market’s Oscar's Cafe) The Square has had an injection of life inserted into it. Brightly coloured picnic benches and umbrellas reside on a large astro turf area surrounded by a picket fence, a new independent coffee shop has popped up and eccentric touches such as an old piano with signs that invite you to have a tinkle makes for a relaxed and pleasant environment to hang out.
Also, The Square is not as isolated as you may think; the regeneration of neighbouring Eastside and the close proximity of the Colmore Business District actually make this an ideal spot to catch the more discerning lunch crowd.
Anyhoo to the food - There were approximately 6 food vendors from which to choose from and as regulars to the Digbeth Dining Club, it was nice to see a few new faces on the Street Market scene, we were particularly impressed with the Cake Doctor who operates (no pun intended) out of a vintage ambulance.
His cakes tasted delicious. We were first attracted to his ambulance by...well his ambulance and then a sign which offered kisses for 50p. These turned out to be brightly coloured meringues!
Jamaican, Mexican, Chilli dogs, Thai - lots of flavours were catered for, I opted for a chilli burrito from the Mexican Bean - a tasty number that I'd highly recommend (picured here for your viewing pleasure).
Another advantage of this location is the abundance of seating, which means you aren’t juggling your food and beverage which has often been a problem for me.
Talking of beverages there’s also an indoor pop up pub the TEKRAMREEB# - no actually it's the #BEERMARKET (backwards) which sells craft beers and wines from around the world; unfortunately visiting on our lunch hour we were unable to sample them, but there was a good selection to choose from.
Live music added to the street food vibe, clement weather and a nice crowd made for a most enjoyable lunchtime treat.
The #LUNCHMARKET will be at the Square every Friday until 1 August 12pm-4pm and is operated by #BRUMYUMYUM the streetfood pimps (and lovers of Caps and hashtags) who already run the successful #KingshEATh Streetfood Market and #BYYUNDERGROUND the world’s first streetfood nightclub.
